The Rotary Club of Belize Sunrise, the Rotary Club of Seven Springs (USA), and Pathlight International (Belize) this week concluded a series of two-day Teacher Training Conferences (TTC) held in the Cayo, Orange Walk, and Stann Creek Districts. With Belize struggling to improve student literacy and limited formal training for educators, this project was identified as an area where assistance through Rotary could have positive, sustainable, and far-reaching impact with teachers and consequently improved learning capabilities for students.
The TTC was based on the “Train the Trainer” model and sought to grow the cadre of Belizean educators with formal teacher training. The conference was open to educators nationwide in pre, primary and secondary schools. 535 educators and administrators participated in the training, with the highest participation at the primary school level with 354 educators. Both Belizean and international trainers facilitated the conference.
Follow up services funded by Rotary to this year’s TTC will include the opening of four (4) Teacher Education Centres in the Corozal, Orange Walk, Stann Creek, and Toledo districts; quarterly follow-up trainings at all three levels; support at monitoring in all 6 districts to promote the content and strategies shared; and video competition for teachers showing their application of content and strategies learned in action.
The TTC is approved by the Teacher Education Development Services (TEDS) in the Ministry of Education and all participating teachers will receive eight (8) Continuous Professional Development (CPD) credit hours.
Rotary is a global organization of more than 1.2 million people with clubs in almost every country in the world, taking action to identify strategic partners that can be engaged through common goals to work towards creating lasting, positive change in our communities. This project was made possible with grant funding from Rotary International and our partner club, the Rotary Club of Seven Springs (Florida, USA).
