“A project whose tremendous benefits could never be overstated, and which represents yet another great example of what can be achieved through the deepening relations and cooperation between our two countries”. That is how CEO in the Ministry of Transport, Ruth Meighan, described the Belize Motor Vehicle Registration and License System executed in partnership with the Government of Taiwan.
She was one of the main speakers yesterday at a soft launch for the project. Other main speakers were H.E. Ambassador Remus Li-Kuo Chen, Taiwanese Ambassador to Belize; and Michael Singh, Chief Technology Officer for the Central Information Technology Office (CITO), Office of the Prime Minister.
Funded by the Taiwanese Government through its International Cooperation Development Fund (ICDF), the project establishes an “integrated and centralized Transport System” for the entire country by reforming and digitalizing the transport processes and services and introducing necessary audit mechanisms.
Elaborating on the benefits of the project whose first phase is nearing completion, CEO Meighan explained, “This first phase enables Department of Transport branches countrywide to share information in real time, and to apply standards that have been reviewed and updated in our laws. By the time the project is fully rolled out, other objectives that will be achieved include, interconnectivity with other supporting agencies (public and private), thereby improving security and enforcement; and enhanced facilitation for the public, enabling them to submit applications and process information for documents through an electronic system, and to make payments 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.”
A presentation on the project’s achievements was done by Vallan Hyde from the Department of Transport. Master of Ceremonies was Brandon Young and the Vote of Thanks was delivered by Kylon Neal, both of CITO.
The ceremony was held at Radisson Fort George Hotel in Belize City.
