Belize Fisheries Department Launches Belize National Lionfish Management Strategy

It has been 10 years since lionfish (Pterois volatinas) was confirmed in Belizean waters and over the course of the decade, considerable efforts have been made to address the threat of the lionfish invasion in our waters.

On Thursday, February 21, 2109, the Belize Fisheries Department in partnership with Blue Ventures, launched the Belize National Lionfish Management Strategy 2019-2023. This document outlines the design and implementation of an integrated approach to lionfish management.

It acknowledges the need to properly understand and address the environmental, social and economic systems affected by the lionfish invasion by adopting a human-natural systems approach. It also provides specific recommendations for the adaptive management of lionfish in Belize. This is an important step that will enable the Department to make informed decision-making with regards to lionfish management.
