Belize’s Travel Advisory Ranking Not Changed Despite Double Murder

The island was shocked at the news of the double murder of Mario Graniel and Dr. Gary Swank and word in town is that many tourists have cancelled their fishing trips and even their entire trips to Belize. But according to the US Embassy in Belmopan, Belize’s travel advisory ranking has not gone up despite of the unfortunate incident.

There are four levels of travel advisories for US citizens which include:
Level 1: Exercise Normal Precaution
Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution
Level 3: Reconsider Travel
Level 4: Do Not Travel

Belize has maintained its level ranking at two despite the recent double murder. The Belize Police Department has since deployed more help to the island and have been conducted operations to help address the violence and crime situation on the island.

The Belize Tourism Industry Association and the Belize Hotel Association have met with the Commissioner of Police and Ministry of National Security and have given them a list of the demands which they consider of utmost importance. Including to increase in size and efficiency of police in all major tourism destinations. To focus more closely on the eradication of the international drug trade which lies at the heart of Belize’s crime problem. And most importantly to significantly increase resources to improve the administration of justice at the level of police prosecution, Director of Public Prosecutions, Magistracy and Supreme Court. And lastly to initiate an ongoing media campaign to urge citizens to partner with law enforcement to work together to help combat crime as a society.
