The COVID19 virus has crippled the world. It has done untold damage to our physical health, our mental health and our financial health. But, here on San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize, Isla Bonita, the damage is almost beyond measure. Ambergris Caye’s only industry is tourism. With the closing of the borders, we instantly had a large number of people who could no longer feed themselves.
A key person on the island that spearheads one of the biggest feeding programs on the island is Maresha Reid who kickstarted a Hot Lunch Program almost immediately after the island went on shutdown due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. The success of the feeding program has been largely due to monetary donations for the purchasing of goods to prepare the meals.
After weeks of feeding hundreds of needy residents, a Go Fund Me page was created to boost donations and on May 15, 2020, Kimberly Wylie put together the Ambergris Caye COVID Relief Cookbook to raise more funds for Maresha’s Hot Lunch Program. Kimberly states that she is donating 100% of the profits to the program and has already donated over $2900 US ($5800 BZD).
The book features nearly 100 recipes donated by local restaurants, chefs, residents, and visitors and features over 100 photos of not only food but pictures donated by top photographers of island life. You can learn more about the book at the website – https://www.ambergris-caye-cookbook.com
