Seven new COVID-19 cases were confirmed this week in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, as Belize starts showing a sharp increase in cases countrywide. There have been close to 100 new cases daily as reported by the Ministry of Health and the death toll has reached to 125 nationwide.
While there are no recent COVID-related deaths on the island, Dr. Javier Canul, of the San Pedro Polyclinic, indicated that there have been cases of Dengue and COVID-19 in more than one patient. Currently, there is one COVID-19 case admitted at the island’s polyclinic that cannot be referred to Belize City because the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital is full at the moment.
“Sadly this is not surprising since we were expecting a surge after election. This should serve as an eye opener and reminder to keep our guard up and continue safe practices,” commented Dr. Javier Canul. “If you have had contact with a positive case and or are exhibiting symptoms kindly report to the polyclinic for assessment. If you have been tested kindly isolate until you have received your results. If you are feeling extremely ill kindly call emergency numbers 671-0911 or 672-0911. Let’s continue to practice safety and decrease transmission.”
