Adolfo Ayuso is San Pedro’s Reef Builder

Senior Dive Instructor at Ramon’s Village, San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize, Adolfo Ayuso has just recently completed Fragments of Hope’s Reef Replenishment course. This makes him qualified to establish new coral formations in Belize’s waters. Adolfo joined the program under his own initiative and is now our island’s coral gardener or reef builder, you might say.

Fragments of Hope (FoH) is a not-for-profit community-based organization registered in 2013 in Placencia Village, Belize focusing primarily on the challenge of coral reef restoration and advocacy for the sustainable management of associated habitats.

Adolfo joins many Belizeans in the program in taking on the responsibility to replant (or re-seed) devastated reefs with genetically robust, diverse and resilient corals that will mature to spawning age/size, allowing the reef to grow. “We couldn’t be prouder of our staff at Ramon’s Village Divers; we appreciate you Adolfo, and glad you are a member of our team,” posts Ramon’s Village on their Facebook Profile.

FoH is a partner with the Belize Fisheries Department, Healthy Reefs Initiative, the Smithsonian Institute and a member of the newly formed regional Coral Restoration Coalition. Its work involves efforts from trained fishers, tour guides, regulatory agencies and a handful of local community members volunteering towards our diverse objectives:

Promoting active management solutions for threats to the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System; 
Protecting the ecology and environment of the marine and related ecosystems in Belize; 
Promoting awareness of the ecology and environment of the marine and related ecosystems in Belize; 
Seeking alternative livelihood options to relieve stress or threats to the marine and related ecosystems in Belize; 
Providing education and capacity building for Belizeans in efforts to meet the above objectives.
