A toy pirate ship, named Adventure, launched by two young brothers, Ollie (11) and Harry(8) Ferguson, from Aberdeenshire, Scotland, had previously sailed the high seas to Scandinavia and onwards to Barbados before being lost at sea. A new toy ship was then launched off the coast of Guyana to continue the transatlantic adventure. Today, Wednesday, January 27, 2021, it arrived in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize.
News from the brother’s facebook page came early this morning that their ship was headed to Belize, due to arrive on Ambergris Caye late in the evening. After being lost at sea around Barbados, the Adventure 2 started its next journey 60 miles north of Guyana in September 2020. It rode currents on the Caribbean Sea and surviving inclement weather. Early in December 2020, the toy vessel landed in a remote area of Honduras.
It was then launched twice from Honduras, first from La Ceiba on January 6 and a second time from the island of Pelican Ridge on January 22. From their it headed straight to Belize. Worried that the toy ship would have trouble crossing the barrier reef, or even the fear of being destroyed, a group of islanders decided to head out to sea and greet the ‘Adventure 2’.
After traveling for about two hours, ten miles out to sea, against very high winds and swells of up to 8 feet, they greeted the toy ship and brought it to town. WOW! It was an exciting time to give the brothers the good news that their adventure ship was safe in Belize.
“Ollie and Harry want to say a big thank you to everyone in Ambergris Caye,” stated their post on their Facebook page. We want to sincerely thank everyone that is getting involved and we hope for good news in the next few hours. Thank you everyone! What amazing kind people live in Belize! Hello from Scotland!”
The Adventure 2 will now spend a few days here in Belize while it awaits the right currents that will steer it up Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula and into the Gulf of Mexico. In the meantime, the ship will be polished and prepped to be launched with much fan fair by island residents who are very excited to be part of this amazing adventure. We will keep you posted!
The project received worldwide media attention, and in October 2019, Ollie and Harris were recognized by Guinness World Record for the longest distance travelled by a toy ship. Click Here to read all about the Adventure’s story (so far) in detail.
