The San Pedro Town Council is taking on the dreaded sargassum head on as the first wave of the nasty stuff has landed and all indications are that it will be a busy season. Residents are advised that the San Pedro Town Council is setting up a sargassum barrier between the Mayan Princess beach access and the municipal pier.
The barrier is a temporary structure that is based on traditional fishing practices. It will guide the sargassum to designated areas for easier pick-up. The Council is asking residents for patience and understanding as the team works to safeguard our beaches, for the enjoyment of all.
The temporary barrier is part of the sargassum response plan and the Council is consulting with leaders across the island to improve the seasonal management of sargassum.
