On Friday, July 14, 2023, Wilfredo Almailla Jr. announced on his social media platform his interest in becoming the next United Democratic Party’s next Mayoral Candidate. Born and raised local Sanpedrano, 52-year-old ‘Teacher Wil’, as he is affectionately known on the island, is the owner and educator of ABC Preschool and has been working with children for the past 33 years. He expressed that his career has helped him develop positive skills that have set a foundation for him to look out for the future of Ambergris Caye. Below is his announcement for his aspirations to become the next UDP Mayoral Candidate; Belize municipal elections for the Town Council will be held in March 2024.
“Born to amazing parents Wilfredo and Wilema Alamilla, I’ve lived in San Pedro my entire life being taught values of love, respect, humility and discipline. God has always been the center of this family and we have grown to be thankful for everything.
I am, 52 year old, Wilfredo Luis Alamilla, owner of the ABC Preschool. At age 19 I chose to become an early childhood teacher and discovered my passion for helping our most precious resource to grow into responsible and competent learners. Today, I have the honor of managing 7 teachers in educating over 100 young minds in one school year. It is a great privilege to be able to guide young Sanpedranos into becoming productive citizens of our communities.
Working with children for the past 33 years has helped me develop positive skills of good communication, planning, creative thinking, decision-making, problem-solving, compassion, empathy, organization and much more while setting a firm foundation for the future of our island. This highly motivates me to always look for ways to improve.
My father has always supported our family from the bounty of the sea. As a fisherman, he has always instilled in me the priceless value of nature and the need for it to be respected and conserved. We’ve seen our Isla Bonita grow from being a small settlement to being our country’s most popular tourist destination. We must be conscious and smart in how we move forward to continue to boast of a prosperous community.
It is for this reason that I decided to be an ASPIRING MAYORAL CANDIDATE for the UNITED DEMOCRATIC PARTY. I intend to protect our tourism industry and the people of our jewel, San Pedro Town. I believe that a strong and united community is necessary for steady success.
Let’s unite and lead happier and healthier lives to build a stronger San Pedro. Let’s create a more stable and supportive society. I give you my heart, strength and willingness to work arduously for our island home. I strongly believe that where there is a will, there is a way!”
