Concerns Raised Over Waste Management Station Conditions in San Pedro

Waste Management Station San Pedro

Concerns over the state of the Waste Management Station in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, have recently been brought to light by locals in the area. According to reports, the situation at the station has become increasingly dire, with the overwhelming stench from the trash pile now causing health issues for workers at the nearby marina.

Although the waste management station is situated far south and on the west side of the island and far from any residential areas, it does sit close to the marina. It’s been reported that some workers at the marina are experiencing skin conditions, presumably linked to the unsanitary conditions present at the facility.

It’s been indicated that the trash pile has grown significantly, with waste not being barged off the island for several weeks. The growing heap of garbage and the resulting foul odor are causing serious concerns about the health and well-being of those working near the facility.

Waste Management Urged to Address Problem

Upon learning of the situation, Ambergris Today reached out to Mayor Wally Nuñez for an update. He mentioned that he has been made aware of the situation and personally contacted Minister Habet to confirmed that the matter has been raised with his office. According to Minister Habet, he has communicated the issue to the Belize Solid Waste Management Authority (SWAMA) and has urged them to address the problem as soon as possible.

Even though garbage collection on the island has not been affected, the accumulation of the waste at the transfer station for such an extended period of time cannot be sanitary for the area and people within the vicinity. As the community awaits a timely resolution, many hope that urgent action will be taken to mitigate this issue at the site. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
