In response to the recent hijacking incident involving a Tropic Air aircraft, enhanced airport security measures have been rolled out at all domestic airline stations in Belize, with Tropic Air and Maya Island Air both announcing stricter protocols to safeguard passengers, crew, and airport personnel. Tropic Air, in a statement released on April 17, 2025, detailed several new procedures now in place across all its domestic stations. Among the most significant changes is the mandatory airport security screening of all passengers and personal items prior to boarding. Passengers may now be subject to physical searches, and personal items typically carried on board must either be gate-checked or checked over-the-counter at no additional cost. Passengers are no longer allowed to bring personal items on their person into the aircraft cabin.

Minors are generally exempt from physical searches, unless there is reasonable suspicion of possession of a prohibited item. However, all minors must still empty their pockets and lift clothing to reveal the waist area during security checks.

Tropic Air emphasized that these measures are part of their commitment to safety and will remain in effect while the airline continues to assess and refine its protocols in collaboration with relevant authorities. “We appreciate your patience and support during this phase,” the airline stated, adding that updates will be provided should there be any changes.

Maya Island Air has also confirmed the implementation of increased security protocols. The airline now conducts carry-on bag checks for all passengers prior to boarding and prohibits the transport of weapons such as guns and knives. Maya has taken additional steps by ensuring that a police officer is present at its station throughout the day. Unlike Tropic Air, Maya Island Air currently allows carry-on items inside the aircraft after inspection.

While these measures aim to restore confidence in domestic air travel, some passengers have expressed discomfort with the new procedures—particularly the physical searches and the restriction on personal carry-ons in the cabin on Tropic Air flights. It is important to note that these changes are not directives from the Belize Airport Authority, but rather initiatives taken independently by each airline in the interest of passenger and crew safety.

As domestic airlines in Belize continue to adjust operations in light of recent airport security concerns, travelers are advised to arrive at the airport with extra time and to comply with all updated screening procedures.
