Belizean pride was on full display last week as San Pedro’s own Kian Trejo joined fellow athletes Ana Lopez Wilburn and Mauro Cucul to represent Belize in the Triathlon event at the XII Central American Games, held on Wednesday, October 22, in Amatique Bay, Izabal, Guatemala.

Despite torrential rain that turned the course into a true test of endurance, all three Belizean athletes gave it their all, finishing strong and representing the Jewel with heart and determination.

In the women’s division, Ana Lopez Wilburn placed 17th, completing the course in 1:39:19.438, one of 19 competitors who started and finished despite the harsh conditions. In the men’s division, Mauro Cucul finished 14th in 1:21:46.749, while San Pedro’s Kian Trejo crossed the line in 1:26:49.859, taking 16th place out of 17 finishers.

No medals were claimed this time, but that doesn’t take away from what was achieved, representing Belize at an international event where simply crossing the finish line is a triumph in itself.

Kian Trejo Reflects on his Experience

Reflecting on the experience, Kian Trejo shared an inspiring message on social media:

“As I wrap up my participation in the Central American Games on a positive note, I’m reminded of the consistent effort I’ve put in over the years to push myself to be better, both on and off the field. While some days are filled with great performances and others with setbacks, I’m proud to have once again represented my nation with dedication, perseverance and pride.”

Kian went on to say that the Games reminded him of his early days competing, the nerves, the gratitude, and the calm that comes from knowing the effort and preparation put into the journey.

“I hope that by sharing my experiences, I can encourage others to strive for their own goals rather than seeing it as boastful. As we get older, we pave the way for the next generation, so I urge you to be bold, confident, and proud of taking small steps, they can lead to great achievements.”

Now also a coach, Kian says he’s proud to be empowering young Belizeans to follow in his footsteps and find their own passion for sports, discipline, and growth. His words remind us that being an athlete isn’t only about medals, it’s about endurance, leadership, and inspiring others to keep pushing forward. For Kian and our Belizean athletes, the road continues, and so does the pride we feel seeing them represent our island and our country on the Central American stage.

Congratulations to Kian Trejo, Ana Lopez Wilburn, and Mauro Cucul for giving it their all, rain, wind, and all, and showing that Belizeans always compete with heart. 🇧🇿🏊‍♂️🚴‍♂️🏃‍♂️
