Sahara Dust Makes for Gloomy Skies

sahara dust makes for gloomy skies in belize

So, have you heard about this Sahara Dust thing? Apparently, it’s been around forever, but it’s only recently that modern forecasts have clued us in on this natural phenomenon. It’s kind of wild to think about, right? I mean, back in the day, we’d just see cloudy skies and maybe think, “Oh, looks like rain.” But now, thanks to all the sneezing fits and the layer of dust settling on everything, we know it’s actually dust making its way over from the Sahara desert.

For the past couple of weeks, Belize has been under a bit of a dust cloud. The skies have been looking pretty gloomy, and even the sunsets have this dramatic, otherworldly vibe to them. Say goodbye to those clear blue skies and hello to hot, humid, and windy weather – definitely not what you’d expect for May, right?

Anyway, I managed to snap a few pics of the sky this morning while I was out running errands around town and over the bridge. Thought I’d share them with you so you can see what I’m talking about. Looks like we might catch a break from the dust over the weekend, but the forecast shows it’ll be back with a vengeance midweek. Ah, the joys of living in the tropics!
