Old Timer or Modern Sanpedrano? #10

By Angel Nuñez

YOU KNOW YOU ARE AN OLD TIMER SANPEDRANO IF
You remember those good old days when the village only had electrical power from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.  There was one small power plant owned by the owner of San Pedro, Mr. Blake, and he had rigged up one line of poles on middle and back streets and there were about ten lights at every corner that brightened up the streets of the village. So you thought you had power in every house back then?  Don’t even think about that.

NOW YOU KNOW YOU ARE A PRESENT DY SANPEDRANO
If you take electrical power for granted.  When there is a block out, or lack of power, for a few minutes you start grumbling about the heat, internet, television, and all other amenities which require electrical power.

Sling Shot and Rubber Bands

YOU KNOW YOU ARE AN OLD TIMER SANPEDRANO IF
You remember playing with sling shot every day until you became a pro and could hit a target or sometimes a bird at a distance of some 30 feet.  And then you also played with rubber bands and orange peeling to sting macala (lizards) and the October dragon flies.  Good old fun in the sleeping village of San Pedro.

AND YOU KNOW YOU ARE A MODERN OR PRESENT DAY SANPEDRANO IF
You might have never put your hands unto a sling shot.  Your entertainment is playing games on your ipod or ipad or even on your laptop.

pizza vs homemade pizza

YOU KNOW YOU ARE AN OLD TIMER SANPEDRANO IF
You don’t remember tasting pizza until you were maybe twenty five years old or older.  With no restaurants in San Pedro, pizzas were not introduced in San Pedro until very late by Jeannie and John Bremekamp who ran the Barrier Reef Restaurant at their place which was a historic landmark, The Blake House, now site of New Heritage Bank.  A few of the first pizza experts were Ismael, Genarito, Jason and Julius Nuñez who were trained by Jeannie.   A night out dining for a special occasion was to the Barrier Reef Pizza Place.  Pizzas were REALLY TRULY VERY SPECIAL.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A MODERN SANPEDRANO IF
You probably have pizzas as often as twice a week.  Not only that, a lot of people on the island know how to prepare delicious pizzas.

Teatro Arenas Cinema, Tarzans, Jaguars Night Club

YOU KNOW YOU ARE AN OLD TIMER SANPEDRANO IF
You remember that watching a movie with cowboys and Indians was a great excitement.  People used to applaud in the old Teatro Arenas Cinema in the 1960’s when the cowboys finally conquered the Indians.  You got excited when you saw a horse running in the screen.  And then your also remember children playing cowboys and Indians on the streets.  The cowboys could shoot and shout “POW POW” while the poor Indians could only run and shout, “You missed me”.

NOW OU KNOW YOU ARE A MODERN SANPEDRANO
Because you do not even like movies of cowboys and Indians.  You do not get excited when you see a horse on a screen.  And then you do not even remember the old Teatro Arenas, the movie place.  You only know Jaguar’s Temple Night Club, which used to be our first movie place.

NOTE:  Incidentally do you know who killed the movie place in San Pedro?  It was Coral Cable Television.  And do you know that the owner of the movie place is also the same owner of Coral Cable Television?
