Today, I had the privilege of witnessing a truly historic moment for our island—San Pedro’s first-ever blood storage unit was officially inaugurated at Ambergris Hope Hospital. As I stood among healthcare workers, community leaders, and everyday heroes who have helped make this possible, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of pride and optimism for the future of healthcare on our little island.
Ambergris Hope Hospital has once again stepped up to meet the growing needs of our community. While this new facility is not a blood bank—which would screen and prepare blood for wider distribution—it is a crucial storage unit that allows for safe and immediate access to life-saving blood when emergencies strike. Currently, the facility at the hospital holds around 10 units of blood, with a total capacity of up to 50. That might not sound like much to some, but to us, it could mean the difference between life and death.
General Manager Cora Guillen delivered powerful remarks during the inauguration, capturing the essence of what this unit represents. “This momentous occasion marks not just the culmination of our efforts but also the beginning of a transformative chapter for our community,” she said. And I believe she’s absolutely right.

Celebrating Blood Storage Unit
Cora went on to explain how this new addition will improve healthcare outcomes, allow for quicker emergency response, and strengthen the existing network of blood donors on the island. “Today, we celebrate not just the facility itself, but the collaboration, dedication, and foresight that have brought us here,” she said. That collaboration includes the Island Donor Squad, a dedicated group that supports the hospital with quarterly blood drives and maintains an emergency donor list for when every second counts.
I was moved by the call to action Cora issued during her speech. She emphasized that this is just the beginning, and that the success of the blood storage unit depends on the continued commitment of our community to donate blood and support the cause. “Let us look forward to the possibilities this unit opens for all, and work together to make it a cornerstone of health and hope on our island,” she concluded.
Leaving the hospital, I felt a renewed sense of hope for what we can achieve together. This storage unit is more than just a refrigerator stocked with blood—it’s a symbol of how far we’ve come, and a reminder of what’s possible when a community unites for the greater good.
I encourage everyone who is eligible to donate blood, join the Island Donor Squad, or simply help spread the word. Together, we can ensure that this vital resource remains available to those who need it most. Here’s to health, hope, and the power of community.
