That’s right! Belize Airways Limited (BAL) was Belize’s very own airline — and our first and only national carrier. It took to the skies on October 1, 1977, operating out of Belize International Airport and proudly repping the Jewel until its final flight on January 11, 1980, just months before Belize gained independence.
BAL wasn’t just about getting from point A to B — it was a whole vibe. Picture this: soaring through the clouds on a jet named Belmopan, Dangriga, or Belize City, while being served a piping hot plate of rice and beans right on board. 🇧🇿🍽️ Now that’s flying in Belizean style!
The airline connected Belize City with major cities like Miami, San Pedro Sula, San Salvador, and La Ceiba, helping to put our little country on the aviation map. With its headquarters right on Queen Street in Belize City, but declared bankruptcy, and its final flight was flown on January 11, 1980. BAL may have flown for just a short time — but it definitely made history.

Belize Airways Limited made us proud as Belizeans and the late Derick Aikman must be applauded for all his efforts and involvement in that venture
