This past Sunday, island residents had the privilege of witnessing something truly special — the very first Kids Fishing Tournament in San Pedro. As a community member and a parent, I can say without hesitation: this wasn’t just an event. It was a powerful reminder of how deeply rooted traditions like fishing can serve as a bridge between generations, and how moments like these strengthen the very core of our community — our families.
Over 300 children and their parents came out on May 11, 2025, lining the shores, seawalls, and piers from early morning with lines in hand and excitement in the air. What made this event so meaningful wasn’t just the thrill of the catch or the promise of prizes — it was the sight of parents and kids doing something real together, outside in the fresh air, connected to the sea that sustains our island life.
As someone who knows how easy it is to get caught up in the hustle and bustle, I found it refreshing — almost healing — to see so many moms and dads casting lines next to their little ones, sharing stories, offering encouragement, celebrating every small catch like it was a grand trophy. Fishing, after all, is more than a sport here. It’s a way of life. It’s part of our identity.

Kids Fishing Tournament Excitement
The Kids Fishing Tournament was thoughtfully organized by local entrepreneur Elito Arceo, along with the Ambergris Caye Fishing Association and several community partners. From the beginning, it was clear this wasn’t about competition — it was about connection. Divided into age groups (5–7, 8–10, and 11–13), the event offered every child a chance to shine and feel proud, no matter their experience level.
Even more impressive was the tournament’s commitment to sustainable fishing practices. Kids were taught to measure their fish, with size limits set for common species like shadow mojarra, snapper, yellowtail, and barracuda. They even had to record videos of their catches — a creative and educational twist that reinforced respect for the sea and its creatures.
And of course, no island event is complete without a bit of excitement. Raffles were held throughout the day, and the joy on the faces of lucky prize winners was only matched by the huge smiles of kids proudly holding up their fish. There were so many prizes, even for those who ended up empty-handed with no luck catch. Elito was so very thoughtful to make everyone happy.
By 2PM, the young fishers and their families gathered at Boca del Rio Beach Park, catches in hand, forming a long and cheerful line at the weighing station. Cheers erupted as the winners were announced by Elito and his team. But in truth, every family there walked away with something valuable — memories, laughter, a stronger bond, and a story to tell.
In a time where screens often replace shared experiences, this kids fishing tournament brought us back to something simple, something grounding. It was a day of pure joy, authentic connection, and community spirit — a reminder that parenting isn’t just about providing, it’s about participating.
To all the organizers, sponsors, and families who showed up: thank you. Thank you for showing our kids that time spent together, learning, laughing, and getting your hands a little dirty, is what truly matters. Here’s to many more casting lines, catching memories, and building an even stronger San Pedro — one smile at a time. 🎣💙
