Monument of Fisherman

For close to fifty years San Pedro was known locally and internationally as a fishing village.  In fact it is fishing that brought about the revolutionary changes that transformed the island community into a prosperous town.  It was fishing that brought about the change from thatch houses to wood and concrete houses. It brought the change from dory to sailing boat to speed boats. It was in the days of fishing that San Pedro got its electrical power service, telephone service, and many other amenities including township- all signs of growth and progress.  To honor the fishermen,  Artist Papo Alamilla carved out this monument on stone at Central Park for the Town Council.  It depicts an expert fisherman with a cast net.  And who is enjoying a day at the beach?   Well, it is none other than Olive Eiley,  Mercy Trejo, Nandito, Tracie, Monica, among other family and friends.  The famous Blake (now Heritage Bank) House and Teatro Arenas (now Jaguar’s Night Club) are in the background.
