There’s something special about old photos of San Pedro. They remind us just how far our little island has come. This Flashback Friday takes us to the corner of Tarpon Street and Barrier Reef Drive, where this small but busy business sat proudly serving visitors and locals alike. Look closely at the sign and you’ll see some of the things that helped shape San Pedro’s growing tourism industry – golf cart rentals, diving, snorkeling, fishing, sightseeing, and even condominium rentals. Back then, one small storefront seemed to do it all!
What amazes me most is that after all these years, this tiny corner spot still houses a golf cart rental business. Through the booms, the changes, and the incredible growth of San Pedro, it has remained a cozy little entrepreneurial gem on the island.

The photo also offers another nostalgic detail. In the background, you can see San Pedro Roman Catholic School before many of the buildings we know today were constructed. The grounds looks completely different from what students and parents see now, a reminder of just how much the town has expanded over the decades.
And then there are the streets. Pure white sand stretching across town, bicycles sharing the road, and hardly a sign of the traffic we experience today. It was a slower pace of life, when San Pedro was still finding its footing as Belize’s tourism destination. Photos like this make you pause and appreciate the journey. The businesses may have changed, the streets may be paved, and the skyline may be different, but the entrepreneurial spirit that built San Pedro is still very much alive.
