Rethink/Override Closure of Sunflower Street to Prioritize Community Needs

letter editor sunflower street

To the Editor,

As a resident and tour operator, I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the recent closure of Sunflower Street in our community. We, the immediate neighbors do not understand the intention behind the decision (if it was even a decision), in the resulting traffic street closure.

During the year, many residents take time to walk around visit each other or just take a walk to the lagoon. Beyond the mere inconvenience, the tour operators within this street had use for some pickups and drop off employees. Furthermore, the children of the neighborhood have raised questions since the closure is nearing if not completed by now.

It has come to the attention as rumors/ word of mouth that this is being assisted by a political figure. We also understand that the properties 1611 & 1636 were purchase by an American national who assists in our community and believes he can do such a thing in our town. Why should us Belizean bow down to this? Do they have more power than us? Does this political figure believe they can do such a thing? They getting paid?

Solutions for Sunflower Street

To move from frustration to function, I strongly urge the municipal council and traffic department to review alternative solutions. The community and neighborhood would like the following:

  • Resident Feedback: Initiating a public forum to gather concrete data on how this closure is impacting local commerce and emergency access.
  • Abort Closure: Leave sunflower street as it should be.

While making our streets pedestrian-friendly is a highly admirable goal, it cannot come at the expense of overall neighborhood usage. I hope that by shedding light on this issue through your esteemed publication, we can encourage town leaders to pause, consult the community, and implement a more balanced approach.

Thank you for providing a platform to raise this important community issue.

Sincerely,
A concerned Neighbor

  1. Closure? looks someone just decided to put up a fence and make their property bigger. Would seem to me that the fence and gate can be ignored, or torn down by anyone wanting to access that part of the public street.
