Volunteers Teach at Holy Cross
A group of fourth-year Bachelor of Education students from Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo, B.C., Canada visited San Pedro to teach at Holy Cross Anglican School for a five-week practicum.
“We knew that Holy Cross Anglican School is a school that runs on donations and that inspired us to fundraise enough money to bring a generous donation to the school we would be teaching at,” commented the students. “Our hope was to raise enough money to give to the school that they could use in any way that would benefit the school and the children. None of us had much experience in fundraising for a large amount, but we set a goal of raising $3,000US.”
The students started fundraising since February, 2010 and continued right up until April before their trip to Belize. In two months they carried out a variety of fundraising activities, such as two bottle drives, a beer & burger night and a raffle draw. They were very happy to have met and exceeded their goal, ending up raising $3,390US.
Students volunteers included Chelsea Vickers, Danika Vickers, Kristy Cradock, Jamie Sheets, Kristin Bradley, Kate Macpherson, Brandie Robinson, Chris Joslin, Shane Wilson, Cory Kropielinski and supervisory, teacher Ron Sandland.
