Two Giants Standing Together

San Pedro Junior College Ground Breaking of New Building

Ground breaking ceremonies were held at the grounds of San Pedro High for the new building for San Pedro Junior College in front of parents, students and teachers of that institution. Dean of San Pedro Jr. College, Mr. Gustavo Ellis, gave the opening remarks and remarked of the opportune time for the new building as the institution celebrates its tenth year and also because there is a big need for classroom space for the development of both institutions. He said that it was only fitting that the new building be named The Hon. Manuel Heredia Hall.

Mr. Ellis expressed his gratitude to be working alongside two great ‘Sons of the Soil’ as are the Hon. Manuel Heredia, Area Rep, and Mr. Angel Nuñez, President of SPJC. President Angel Nuñez attributed his excellent working relationship with Hon. Heredia to his childhood and teenage friendship. He expressed that together they contributed in several community projects for San Pedro and later on Heredia went into public service and he into education and both of them continued providing much needed services to the community. He said that Heredia did not hesitate one second in lending his support to San Pedro Jr. College because he too has an inherent love and concern on youths and children. .Mr. Nuñez then humbly added that while he might be seen as ‘A Son of the Soil’, in his opinion Mr. Heredia was a “Father of the Soil” for his immense contributions.

Hon. Heredia expressed his great satisfaction in working alongside San Pedro High because he and his government believe in an educated youth for the welfare of our community and nation. Heredia explained that Government gladly conceded that land in Ambergris Caye be identified and sold to generate funding for this project. He added that government is committed that before the end of their first term in office, they guarantee that San Pedro will have a new full-time government primary school as well. This news was received with much enthusiasm by all those present.

In her Vote of Thanks, SPJC student Paula Guerrero extended thanks to the Honorable for his cooperation with both SPHS AND SPJC. She thanked Mr. Angel Nuñez for his continued vision and steadfast support for education at all levels. Paula added that it will be inspiring to see these two giants in education standing side by side meaning the Angel Nuñez Auditorium and the Hon. Manuel Heredia Hall.

The very enthusiastic gathering then proceeded outside the auditorium for Nuñez and Heredia to make the first two shovelfuls of soil to mark the commencement of construction of the new building. The building is estimated to cost 350,000.00 dollars and hopefully will be completed for the commencement of the new school year in September.
