Dr. Dennis Kubasko of UNCW (University of North Carolina Wilmington) has been coming to the island with students to do their teaching internship and volunteering their services at schools on the island for a couple of years now.
During this recent trip Mayor Paz presented to Dr. Dennis Kubasko, Dr. Susan Catapano and Marilyn Cantrell with a small gift on behalf of the community of San Pedro as a token of appreciation for their great support in the education department here on the island. Mayor Paz also presented a gift for Mr. Steve Meinhold and Mr. Bill Saffo – Mayor of Wilmington North Carolina. The gifts were printed ceramic tiles with pictures of island scenes of San Pedro by photographer Jose Luis Zapata.
In 2007, upon initiation from Mr. Bill Saffo, Mayor of Wilmington, North Carolina, Mayor Paz travelled to Wilmington and on June 5, 2007, they signed a Sister City Treaty between the city of Wilmington and San Pedro Town.
With the signing of this agreement both San Pedro and Wilmington agreed to support and encourage opportunities for mutually beneficial practical exchanges in the fields of business, arts and culture, health, science, education and tourism.
