NEMO Observes Emergency Awareness Week

Did You Hear the Tsunami Siren? – As part of the National Emergency Management Organization of Belize (NEMO) Emergency Awareness Week, a Tsunami Threat Exercise was held in San Pedro. On Saturday, May 28, the San Pedro Fire Department sounded the alarm through the streets of San Pedro Town. This was a practice in case there is a Tsunami threat for Belize. Emergency Awareness Week was observed under the theme “Preserving life and property”. Last week the Committee put together a week of activities to enhance the knowledge of the community on disaster preparedness which included:

Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis Training – This was held at the Belize Yacht Club on Wednesday, May 25, with an all day training exercise.

A public display at the San Pedro Lions Den on Friday, May 27, where there were educational and communication information and the Fire Department, BDF and Belize Coast Guard displayed equipment used to save lives.

There will be a Public Meeting held on Wednesday, June 1 – At the Lion’s Den at 7:00 p.m. Minister Heredia and Mayor Paz will be there to address community. Presenters include – Education, Communication, Information and Warning Chairperson Mr. Panton, Ms. Lisa Tillett – Public Health Inspector, Pablo Ico -Transport/evacuation Chairperson and Amy Lieva Chairperson Tourism and Housing and Shelter Chairperson.
