The San Pedro AIDS Commission took to the streets yesterday afternoon, Thursday, December 1, 2011, World AIDS Day, for their annual Solidarity Walk to show support and create awareness for HIV/AIDS on the island.
All the hard work that the Commission dedicates itself throughout the year seems to be paying off as the Solidarity Walk was better attended than last year. The AIDS Commission president, Felix Ayuso and group members are doing a great job of organizing this annual event. The Commission sent out invitations to business establishments around the island to participate.
Joining the Walk this year included Miss San Pedro, Yakarelis Hernandez, Miss San Pedro Lions Shantell Pascascio, Miss Chiquitita Gabriela Knox, Mr. Jade Belize Jhoshi Alexander Valencia, staff members from businesses in town, Lion Club members, Town Councilors, PUP and UDP candidates, among others.
The Commission also organized its first Annual Dinner & Charity Auction that was held at Crave Restaurant immediately after the Walk. The San Pedro AIDS Commission and Crave organized a good evening with delicious food, fabulous company, a fun auction and raffle, all to raise funds and awareness to help this very worthy cause.
The San Pedro AIDS Commission is made up of solely volunteers from all walks of life dedicated to bringing HIV/AIDS education and awareness to our community. The San Pedro AIDS Commission has embarked in an educational/awareness campaign to help sensitize the general populace about the HIV/AIDS epidemic. These events help procure much needed funds for this campaign and assist those who have been infected and/or are affected by HIV/AIDS and for the committee to continue its mission to educate.
AIDS Fair on Sunday, December 4, 2011
An AIDS Fair will be conducted all day long by the Commission at Central Park on Sunday, December 4, where there will be FREE rapid HIV testing and sale of food, pastries and drinks as part of their fundraising. HIV/AIDS information will be on display and distributed. The fair always has a successful outcome with close to 100 residents getting tested every year, which is completely confidential.
