Saturday, July 21, 2012, was the proudest day of Joel Hodgson’s life as the 25 year-old Belizean native carried the Olympic torch through London. He is now preparing for more international sporting glory.
Joel Hodgson bore the flame along the streets of Newham, east London, whilst thousands of people cheered him on. After passing on the torch at 11 o’clock on Saturday morning, Joel went to a star-studded event at Newham Town Hall, where he was congratulated by the singer Paloma Faith.
“It was a very emotional day and I only wish my dad was alive to see it, although I know he was looking down on me,” stated Hodgson to the Daily Reporter. “If I had told myself a few years ago I would play a part in the London Olympics, I never would have believed it. This has shown me that anything is possible.”
Joel, who now works for one of London’s top law firms, hopes his torch run is only the start of his athletics dream as he is set to represent Belize, his home country, in the 100m at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
“Now I’ve carried the flame and could be flying the flag for Belize in Scotland, the country I call home. Life doesn’t get much better than this. I will always remember this,” stated Hodgson. Joel will join the Belize team in the Olympic stadium to hoist their country’s flag ahead of the official opening ceremony on Friday, July 27, 2012.
