Local fisherman and tour guide Abner “Abby” Marin will be in the international spotlight once again! He has gotten the opportunity to star in an upcoming television competition series that will highlight one of the major attractions to the country – Fishing. A film crew from National Geographic HD was on the island this past weekend taking footage for their latest fishing competition series, King Fishers.
Abby has over 25 years of fly fishing experience and can be considered as San Pedro’s top fly fishing guide and angler. Abby has been internationally described as “the Michelangelo with a fly rod when it comes to bone finishing”. This is one of the many reasons that Abby was chosen to represent Belize to compete against two other anglers for the title of King Fishers.
National Geographic’s King Fishers Series will air in summer 2013 and will feature 30 anglers from around the world in a total of ten episodes. Three anglers from different countries will travel to each competitor’s country where they will compete in fishing and will host the other two anglers to a cultural experience.
Abby was officially introduced to the other two anglers on Friday, November 23, 2012, one from Ireland and one from Sweden. Filming continued on Saturday, November 24, 2012, when the three anglers were in competition fishing in our beautiful Caribbean waters. The night continued as Abby hosted the two anglers to a fun barbeque night with cultural entertainment by the San Pedro Dance Academy and The Garifuna Jankunu Dancers.
Abner Marin has been featured in a documentary film by Costa del Mar entitle “Currents of Belize” and has represented Belize in a fly fishing competition at the Teva Mountain Games Colorado, as well as featured in This is Fly Magazine, to name a few. National Geographic HD International will air the show in 130 countries not including the US. Abner Marin is now on his way to Ireland and then Sweden. You make us proud Abby; all the best!
