Coming up on their third year of working for the community, the San Pedro Cancer Society held its first banquet in celebration and appreciation towards all the people who commit to the society and those who assist the group in its endeavors. The event took place on Saturday, June 8, 2013, at Elvi’s Kitchen.
When the disease started affecting more island residents and there was more need of assistance and education, was when a group of individuals organized the San Pedro Cancer Society. The very founding members had family affected by the terrible disease. This was three years ago and today the Society has been able to donate over $11,092.50 to directly assist 18 cancer patients, four of which are no longer with us (may they rest in peace). Assistance to them included treatment, medication and traveling expense to the Dangriga Cancer Center.
Besides assistance to cancer patients, the Society has also helped nine other residents in non-cancer related cases; an additional $3,700 has been donated towards other unfortunate cases within the community.
The anniversary banquet managed to raise $805.00 with the great assistance of the management and staff of Elvi’s Kitchen and $5,900.00 of donations from the newly awarded honorary members who included Sage Bush, Castillo’s Hardware, Kelly and Mukul Kanabar, Ambergris Today, San Pedro Sun, Conch Creative, San Pedro Lions Club, Victoria House, The Palms, Mayor Daniel Guerrero and Area Representative Hon. Manuel Heredia Jr., Tropic Air and Elvi’s Kitchen. Mrs. Elvia Staines of Elvi’s Kitchen also pledged to start a collection fund by next month at the restaurant by asking their customers for at least $1 donations towards the Cancer Society.
“Thank You, for making all of our struggles worth the while! Congratulations San Pedro!” commented President of the San Pedro Cancer Society, Migel Perez. “Our work has paid off and the banquet celebrating the anniversary of the San Pedro Cancer Society has been an overwhelming success!”
Ambergris Today wishes the San Pedro Cancer Society much continued success and thanks the group for all their hard work as well.
