San Pedro Resident to Compete at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland

The XX Commonwealth Games will be held in Glasgow, Scotland from July 23 to August 3, 2014 and as a precursor to the games, the Queen’s Baton arrived in Belize on Her Majesty’s Queen Elizabeth II 88th birthday, Monday, April 21, 2014. The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) World News team is travelling around the world following the Baton Relay and making features, not only about the Queen’s Baton, but also featuring athletes’ stories.

The filming crew from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) World News met with San Pedro Mayor Daniel Guerrero, Deputy Mayor Gabriel Nuñez and Hon. Manuel Heredia Jr., Minister of Tourism, Culture & Civil Aviation and Mr. Kent “Bob” Gabourel and were interviewed in regards to Bob’s participation in the XX Commonwealth.

Our tiny country of Belize is amongst 71 Commonwealth countries and British territories that will participate in the Commonwealth Games. Belize will send a team of 19 to the Glasgow games, including officials, and will compete in athletics, cycling, shooting, table tennis and triathlon. One of the Belizean athletes participating in the 2014 Commonwealth Games is Bob, who will be competing in the Olympics Distance One-Man Triathlon.

The triathlon competition in Glasgow, includes – swimming, cycling and running. The challenge consists of a 1,500-metre open-water swim before switching to a 40-kilometre road cycle and finishes with a challenging 10-kilometre run.

Bob is no stranger to island residents, he is well known for his participations in sports and his passion for competing in triathlon marathons. He loves cycling, running and swimming and is a very active community member who is always helping youths on the island with sports. Bob has competed in Belize’s Lionman Triathlon Competition, has been technical staff for the Belize National Football Team, is a member of the San Pedro Sports Council, Chairman of the San Pedro Cycling Club and a coach trained in FIFA Grassroots training.

Belize’s participation in this symbolic precursor event took place from Easter Monday, April 21, 2014, through to the baton’s departure on Thursday, April 24, 2014. During its journey in Belize, the baton made its rounds to Belize City’s House of Culture, Belize Youth Hostel & Cadet Corp, Governor General Field in Belmopan, BTL Princess Royal Park in Dangriga Town and Punta Gorda Central Park in Punta Gorda Town.
