For the first time, Belize will represent at this global STEM event. Belize High School takes its three-year running Robotics Club to the FIRST Global annual internationally organized robotics challenge, igniting a passion for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) for our students as they participate alongside the more than two billion youths from across the world.
In this first attempt, the Belize High School of Belize City and Ocean Academy of Caye Caulker have partnered to represent Belize in the “Olympics”- style robotics challenge. Our Belizean students will network and build relationships with high school students of different backgrounds, languages, religions, and customs.
The Belize Delegation includes Principal Jamie Usher and Mr. Godfrey Sosa of BHS and Ms. Joni Miller of Ocean Academy, team mentors Miguel Tzub, Marcelli Young and students:

Our young engineers have been hard at work building, programming and designing the robot to match this year’s theme “Energy Impact.” The Arena Ciudad de Mexico, Mexico City, hosts the event from August 15-18,2018.
By bringing these future STEM leaders together in an engaging and collaborative competition that drives home the importance, excitement, and applicability of STEM education, FIRST Global inspires students to learn the skills they will need to make the discoveries their parents and grandparents would consider miracles, impossibilities, or just plain science fiction.
Belize High School opened its doors as a secondary school in 2010. In 2015, the school introduced the Robotics Student Club as an extra-curricular activity stemming from its Information Technology class. Last school year (2016/2017), the school introduced Information Technology as a track of study and seven students of the 2018 Graduates completed the diploma program in Networking, Programming and Database Administration. Of BHS Alumni, Trei Solis, Marco Diaz, Annie Ponce, Ricardo Oyuela, Omar Ortiz, Victor Quan all pursued degrees in Information Technology. Most recently, Tyler Eck earned a scholarship to study Information Technology at the National Dong Hwa University in Taiwan.
