Hondurans Busted for Fishing in Belizean Waters

During the early morning hours of Friday, October 18, 2019 the Belize Coast Guard detained two Honduran Nationals who were caught fishing in Belizean waters. These men were then handed over to the rangers of the Southern Environmental Association, who formally arrested the detained men.

These persons were later identified to be Alfredo Toledo and Cristian Funez, both of Puerto Cortez, Honduras. These men have been successfully charged at the Magistrate court in Dangriga Town with (1) “Engaged in commercial fishing whilst not being the holder of a valid fisherman’s licence” and (2) “Use of a vessel for commercial fishing without a valid boat license to fish”.  It is also expected that immigration charges will levied as well.

SEA and the Belize Coast Guard will continue to conduct strategic patrols to ensure the protection of Belize’s marine resources and continues to encourage fishers to abide by the Belize Fisheries Regulations.

SEA takes this opportunity to thank the Belize Coast Guard for their support and assistance in ensuring the protection of Belize’s Marine resources.
