Man Goes Fishing and Drowns in San Pedro

One man is dead as a result of a drowning incident that occurred over the weekend in San Pedro. According to official police reports, on Friday, November 8, 2019, at about 2:49 p.m. San Pedro Police visited the San Pedro Polyclinic, upon arrival, they observed the lifeless body of male person identified as Gustavo Lizzaraga, 25-year-old, Belizean laborer of a San Pedro Town address.

Initial investigation revealed that about 12:00 p.m., Gustavo Lizarraga Jr. was along with his cousin when they went south of San Pedro Town en-route to the Barrier Reef area approximately 1 ½ mile away from shore to fishing. They were onboard a green kayak and 45 minutes into their fishing trip, water got into the kayak which caused it to sink.

Both men began swimming towards shore, but Gustavo mentioned that he couldn’t make it, and stayed by the kayak, while Lizarraga swam towards shore to seek assistance. Upon his return with help, the body of Gustavo was observed floating face down in the water. His body was retrieved and transported to the San Pedro Polyclinic where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
