San Pedro’s own Alma Pinelo is once again blazing trails in Belize’s military history. On Friday, July 11, 2025, she was officially pinned as Commander (CDR) of the Belize Coast Guard, following her promotion on May 22. This groundbreaking achievement makes her the first woman in the country to hold this high-ranking title. She’s not stopping there, Pinelo has also been appointed Chief of Staff, a brand-new leadership position within the Coast Guard.
This milestone is just the latest in a career marked by “firsts” for the proud island daughter. Back in 2013, Alma made headlines when she graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, earning her commission as an officer. Her accomplishments since then have been nothing short of impressive.
By 2019, she had climbed the ranks to become a Lieutenant Commander, another first for a Belizean woman, and was celebrated for her leadership and dedication to service.
Then in 2022, the U.S. Embassy in Belize honored her as “Woman of the Year”, recognizing her as a role model not only within the Coast Guard but also for women across the country who dream of breaking into traditionally male-dominated fields.
Congratulations Alma Pinelo

With her new titles of Commander and Chief of Staff, Alma Pinelo continues to break ground and redefine what leadership looks like in Belize’s armed forces. Her story is not just about personal triumph, it’s a symbol of possibility for the next generation of women in uniform.
A true Sanpedrana at heart, Alma Pinelo carries the pride of Ambergris Caye wherever she goes. From the classroom to international waters, and now to the uppermost ranks of national service, she continues to make her hometown and her country incredibly proud.
