First Lady of Belize Diagnosed with Breast Cancer

Press Release, Special Envoy for Women and Children, Belmopan, November 7, 2011 – The office of the Special Envoy for Women and Children announces that Mrs. Kim Simplis Barrow left the country on Sunday to seek urgent medical attention in Miami, United States of America.

The Office confirms that Mrs. Barrow has been diagnosed with breast cancer and will be starting treatment as soon as the most viable treatment option has been determined. The treatment is not available in Belize.

As an official advocate for women and children and someone who has al-ways been supportive of the fight against cancer, Mrs. Barrow thought it important not to conceal her diagnosis from the public. While the length of treatment and thus her stay abroad is still to be specified, Mrs. Barrow hopes to be back home by Christmas. In the meantime, she appreciates the solidarity and prayers of all well-wishers.

Prime Minister, the Hon. Dean Barrow, left the country yesterday, Sunday, November 6. He is accompanying his wife, Mrs. Kim Simplis Barrow, to Miami, Florida, where Mrs. Barrow will seek urgent medical attention.

Prime Minister Barrow is scheduled to return to Belize on Monday, November 14. Minister of Defence and Immigration, the Hon. Carlos Perdomo, is acting as Prime Minister until the return to the country later today of Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon. Gaspar Vega. Deputy Prime Minister Vega will then act as Prime Minister until Mr. Barrow returns.
