SPHS Male Softball National Champions

The San Pedro High School, Northern Region Champions, participated in the National Secondary School Softball tournament held on Friday, March 16 and Saturday, March 17, at the Denbigh Fuller Stadium in Camalote Village in the Cayo District. In the semi-finals game played on Friday, March 16, 2012, the SPHS boys handily defeated the western champs Belmopan Baptist School 13 to 1 behind a strong pitching performance from Charles Richards. In other semi-finals games, the Central Region Champs, St. John’s College edged out the Southern Champions, Independence High School 9 to 8.

The championship game between SJC and SPHS was a hotly contested match where neither of the team gave up. SPHS was down to its last three outs trailing SJC 9 to 6 and was given a huge boost by leadoff hitter Alex Roache in the bottom of the 5th inning. Alex pumped the first pitch he saw to a straightway center for a home run cutting the deficit to two. Roache’s homerun would derail SJC’s pitching ace composure that would aid SPHS in tying the game through a series of walks, hit by pitch and wild pitches. With the game tied at 9 apiece with two on and two outs SJC opted to walk  Cole Ray to face Charles Richards who had struck out in his two previous at bats. Richards would deliver an infield single scoring Luis Pinelo from 3rd base propelling SPHS to its First National Titel in any sport. At the end of the tournament the Most Valuable Players honors was awarded to Charles Richards.
