San Pedro Team Places 3rd at Volleyball Tournament in Caye Caulker

Bryton Codd/Francis Hauze and Shantell Arnold/Emma Hoare win the 2018 SMART Lazy Lizard Beach Volleyball Tournament in Caye Caulker

Twelve male teams and six female teams competed in the Belize Volleyball Association’s 2018 SMART Lazy Lizard Beach Volleyball Tournament in Caye Caulker over the weekend at The Split. The tournament was spectacular, with a large fan base present on both Saturday, May 19th and Sunday, May 20th. This official BVA 2X2 beach volleyball tournament was the second annual event at Lazy Lizard, and was a huge success, with high level beach volleyball being played. It was very well attended by beach volleyball enthusiasts from across Belize, and Mexico, as well as quite a number of tourists who were in Caye Caulker over the weekend.

In the Male category, Bryton Codd & Francis Hauze from Belize City were victorious over the Mexican team, Eduardo Alejandro Osorio and Eric Canche Turrizia. They won the final in two sets 21-19, 21-14, and came away with the $1,200 first prize. Osorio and Turrizia went home with the $800 second prize. The two semifinal matches were some of the best beach volleyball observed in Belize in recent years. Codd and Hauze defeated Gabriel Nuñez and Ricky Luna, and Osorio and Canche defeated Jason Cabral and Badir Sajia in semifinals that went to three sets. Nuñez and Luna went home with the third place prize of $500.

In the Female Category, Shantell Arnold & Emma Hoare from Belize City were victorious over Maurissa Williams and Tanisha Encalada, also of Belize City. They won the final in two sets 21-7, 21-7, and went home with the $1,200 first prize. Williams and Encalada took home the $800 second prize. Mya Musa and Aya Safa won the third place price of $500 after defeating Marci Mejia and Iman Safa in two sets.

Teams represented were from Punta Gorda, Hopkins, Corozal, Belize City, San Pedro, Caye Caulker and Orange Walk, with one international team from Cancun, Mexico.
