Marine Life Encounters in Belize

– By Rachel Graham / Mar Alliance “With rain clouds threatening to change the course of our field day and subsequently drenching our students and team we were not sure how our Kids Meet Sharks field trip would unfold. Well, it turned into a magnificent day of sunshine, of learning and conquering of fears.

For us it means the world to see students’ eyes light up when they snorkel for the first time and see big fish, sharks, rays, turtles and more, all with their barrier reef as a backdrop. These are life changing moments for some and we feel privileged to have enabled these pivotal points and been witness to a shift in how they perceive their world. Thank you Ecology Project International and Restore Belize for choosing such a wonderful group of high school students and thank you to the teachers for accompanying them and also gamely taking part of the in-water fieldwork.”

“We are thankful to our donors the Wildlife Conservation Network, the New England Biolabs Foundation and the Whitley Fund for Nature for their support of KMS. We also send a big shout out to Mariela Archer who tirelessly educates so many about the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, and to Ambergris Divers for providing the boat and staff at cost for this KMS trip.”
