Friends of the Humane Society (FOTHS) and SAGA Thrilled at Success of FAB Ball Despite being delayed because of Tropical Storm Alex, the FAB Ball turned out to be a truly fabulous event, raising money for SAGA Humane Society and giving everyone a night to remember. Approximately $5,000 was raised on the evening, all of which will help SAGA to care for the animals of San Pedro.
Stakeholders of the Tourism sector rendezvoused at the Black Orchid Resort in Burrel Boom on Friday, July 2, for the 2010 bi-annual general meeting hosted by the Belize Hotel Association. The Marco Gonzalez Maya Site at the south end of Ambergris Caye is currently the host to 25 students since Wednesday, June 23. Ten students are from the University of London, England, and 15 students are from the University of North Carolina Wilmington, USA. One of the students from the University of London, Ms. Nadia Glassup is presently studying archaeology and as part of her thesis for obtaining her Master’s Degree; she is doing field work here in the Marco Gonzalez Maya Site.

Quick action by the fire department and volunteers prevented a possible fire disaster in downtown San Pedro at a building that houses four businesses and one residence on Friday, June 25. The fire started at Full Chevere Internet Cafe located at ground level of the building; building is located on the corner of Pescador Drive and Tarpon Street, across of the R.C Primary School.
The Miss Lobster Festival Pageant in Caye Caulker was about the only event that was not canceled between the two neighboring islands of La Isla Bonita and La Isla Cariñosa as Tropical Storm Alex made its way through Belize over the weekend. And the island residents of Caye Caulker got to celebrate the crowning of their new Lobster Fest Queen just before the weather went from bad to worse. Stephanie Arce was crowned the new Miss Lobster Fest.
A meeting held at the Sunbreeze Hotel Conference Room on Tuesday, June 22, 2010, was a powerful engine that was provided by the Ambergris Caye Citizens for Sustainable Development (ACCSD) for our island residents to learn more about the coalition that is opposing drilling offshore and in protected areas in our country.
Discovery Expeditions – Sea Trek Operation at Mexico Rocks has created quite a controversy on the island as many business owners, tour operators/tour guides and residents are discontent with the concept involved in the operation. It was no doubt that, just by looking at the large crowd that showed up at Saturday’s Block Party, Lobster Fest was a huge success. A very large gathering of locals and tourists flooded Central Park on Saturday, June 19, at the culmination of week-long Lobster Fest celebrations; a festival that has been deemed by Frommer’s Guide Books as one of the “300 Unmissable Events and Festivals Around the World”.
Aristophanes (Greek Athenian Dramatist) once said - “Let each man exercise the art he knows” and that is exactly what these three artists – Sylvin Forman, Sophie Lisbey Forman and James Jopson have been doing; they are exercising the art they know. On Friday, June 18, they held an Art Exhibition entitled “A Show of Hands 3” at the Spindrift Hotel.
Lobster Festival activities kicked off on Monday, June 14, with a “Meat and Greet” Cocktail Party at El Divino (Banana Beach Resort) as Lobster season opened on Tuesday, June 15. Arriving on the island on Sunday, June 13, was celebrity weatherman Joey Stevens and Bob the Parrot of One Caribbean Weather/WSEE TV as they will cover the entire week’s events leading up to the Lobster Fest Block Party on Saturday, June 19 at Central Park.
Sean McDermott Fundraiser for San Mateo In a benefit performance for the San Mateo Road Building Fund, the Paradise Theater presented "An Evening with Sean McDermott" on June 10 and 12. The Broadway star celebrated his musical journey with a collection of songs and stories from his roles on Broadway to starring on television and his European tour with Barbara Streisand.
San Pedro High School held its Graduation Mass and Commencement Exercises on Saturday, June 12, at the R. Angel Nuñez Auditorium where 50 graduates were in attendance to receive their diplomas. It was a delightful program with awards and acknowledgements of special recognitions marking the culmination of four years of studies for a very proud group of seniors of San Pedro High.
